The Challenge
LearningMate had to provide a comprehensive online course for the NCLEX-RN exam preparation along with a Study Plan. The task at hand was to summarize the content areas in which the learner had scope for improvement and then to prioritize the module for access with the help of a Study Plan. The requirements were, then:
  • provide testing features that were not supported by Blackboard/WebCT (LMS)
  • use Hot Spot type questions
  • intersperse the questions within the content
  • develop a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) based on the one-parameter Item Response Theory model, that works exactly like an NCLEX-RN licensure exam
  • enable students and instructors to use the LMS grade book for all assessments score reports
  The LearningMate Solution
The complete NCLEX-RN course was developed and stored in the LearningMate ACE repository using LearningMate ICE. Special metadata for the content areas was provided for the questions to be used for Diagnostic Pre-Test and CAT. LearningMate ACE was a single source repository for delivering the NCLEX-RN course to multiple instances of Blackboard/WebCT.

LearningMate ACE captured the performance of the student in the Diagnostic Pre-Test. The customised content logic (business logic) component is used to determine the weakest to strongest content areas and then presents a custom study plan with prioritized content.

A custom component was developed to support Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) based on the one-parameter Item Response Theory model. Support was added to the Assessment and Course Player (ACP) to functionalise Hot-Spot question types and interspersing of questions within content. Scores for all the assessments were posted to the LMS grade book. Additional features were provided for instructors and students, enabling them to view detailed score reports from LearningMate ACE.
